Penny Grubb, crime writer and ALCS Chair

Rosie and Monty are delighted to welcome Penny Grubb to their blog. They love reading crime novels (and the fact that Penny carries doc choc drops in her pocket is neither here nor there…)

Penny writes crime novels about a Private Investigator. It’s not that she writes what she knows, exactly, but she does write what she likes to read…

She is also Chair of the biggest writing-related organisation in the world - that is, the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society - this means she has writers’ best interests at heart and works out what dosh they can get for secondary rights. (Which is pretty fab and also means writers can afford to give their dogs more bones.)

To get back to the books she writes, ‘The Doll Makers’ won the International Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger; and ‘Like False Money’ was nominated for the International John Creasey Dagger - both recognitions of the fabulousness of her work were, of course, accepted with becoming modesty.

Penny thoroughly researches the 21st century PI in order to provide the authenticity which is a trade mark of her novels.

Part of that research involves interviewing real people - real victims, real criminals…….

...and real law investigator type people, too, including forensic detectives and pathologists…

Being a novelist often results in reactions from these interviewees ranging from suspicion on the one paw, to camaraderie which often involves too much detail, and even offers of work!

It’s all valuable material to Penny, and you can find out how she’s used it in her three novels due to be released on November 12th in paperback. (Found in all good bookstores on- and off-line.)

They have fab covers:

Rosie reckons ‘The Dollmakers’ cover is dead scary…….
Penny will be out there with her special pen signing books in WH Smith’s…
- and there's a 3 for £15 offer going on - yay!
The signings:

19 November WHS Books Beverley 9.30 to 11.30
19 November WHS Prospect Centre Hull 12.00 to 2.00
26 November WHS Coney Street York 12.00 to 2.00

10 December WHS Victoria Shopping Centre Harrogate 12.00 to 2.00

Rosie: It’s been very interesting finding out how you work, Penny! Come back soon. *don’t forget to refill the dog choc drop pocket, though*

Monty: It’s been lovely getting to know you, Penny. You can come back anytime - even if your dog choc drop pocket IS empty. No. Really. I mean it. Honest. I do. Yeah.

That Tweet button lets you tweet this post just like that! It's magic - here's another one (oh, go onnnnnnnn - tweet it...):

Oh MontyandRosie, how cute are these drawings. And, we are so excited for your "human". Giggle.

Hugs,

Yes, it is pretty exciting for her - all her books out in paparback for the first time. Coo. And all that signing of them, too, in real bookshops and all...

Lovely to see you, Prudence. As ever.

Hugs to you.

Prudence, I SO agree with you. So very cute!
Thank you for letting me vist your blog, MontyandRosie. I just love the illustrations. This is THE way to write up interviews. When will M&R have their own column in one of the big dailies?
My personal favourites are the sleuth with the Sherlock Holmes glass and Rosie reading the Doll Makers.

You're very welcome, Penny! Thanks for idea ref column in a big daily, but we prefer to save ourselves for the special stuff - you know - quality over quantity and all that. Talking of which (Rosie says) it only takes a few dog choc drops to keep me sweet...

Aw, I came over to wave at Monty and Rosie (and Susan of course) and who do I find but the lovely Penny here. *waves madly to all*

I am totally in awe of the illustrations, as always. I 'think' my favourite is of the criminals. I love the jewellery and the tattoo. :)

Hope you sell zillions of books, Penny!

Thank you, Shirley! Always fab to see you. 'Criminals'?? Do you mean the Bad Dogs??? Yeah. You do. Bad Dogs. They're Bad Dogs. Just very, very Bad Dogs locked up in the Big Kennel. Unlike us - we're Good Dogs. Very Good Dogs. Yeah.

Thanks for your kind words, Shirley. These really are amazing illustrations, aren't they? Always worth popping in here if in need of a chuckle.

Monty and Rosie are great interviewers. Perhaps they could have their own talk show? They are a versatile pair. We have a picture of one of them scuba diving in our hallway.

Their own talk show is a great idea, Sue. A sight better than many such that are currently on offer.

Wow, thanks Susan. What a wonderful blog. I have subscribed now so happy days. More lovely dog piccies please.

We've recently bought a black labrador puppy so we're definitely dog people again now.

Oh, and a word to the wise, if you like cheese plants growing magnificently, spreading like wildfire across one corner of, say, your living room... don't buy a labby.

Cheers again.

Keep up the good work.

Dan, Gabi and Milly x

As a fellow interviewee of Monty and Rosie, I'd like to add my congratulations, too. Great pictures. (Mine now has a permanent home on my website, I'm so proud of it.)

As always - I love the pictures, I love the interview, and I love the author's books! Monty and Rosie know how to pick a winner...

Lesley, what a good idea re your website. It looks great. I'm just having mine redone. It's having a makeover - going from DIY (or should I say hit-or-miss) to a Wordpress platform. Mid change at the moment, but fingers crossed.

Thank you for the kind words, Caroline. It's always worth dipping into this blog and especially if you're looking for something to make you smile.

Rosie and Monty are considering the requests for them to have their own talk show. Of course, they are very flattered but some considerations are overtaking their natural flair for exhibitionism - one of the main ones, of course, being that they were always taught not to talk whilst eating. A talk show would take up so much time it might severely limit eating time so the future of The Monty and Rosie Show is in some doubt at the moment. Further consideration will be paid to the idea though. There's always an answer and it might be that one could eat while the other talks, but then how would they work out whose turn it was....???? So many difficult ponderings to ponder....

I've had more queries about this blog interview than almost anything I've ever done. I just say "I've been interviewed by two border collies" and people start asking questions. Amazing. I dropped in here, too http://johnhoff3.wordpress.com/2011/11/21/author-penny-grubb/?replytocom=326 which is a pretty cool site but fewer collies and not so many pics.

Cripes! No Border Collies!!! Not many pics!!! What kind of site can it possibly be???

Oh, it does have dog choc drops behind the scenes. That's okay then. We'll go and have a nose around...
